Devious Journal Entry

Thu Nov 12, 2009, 8:49 PM
Finally, I have a moment of free time to update on what I'm up to. Mozilla wasn't letting me post a journal, so most of this is from the 30th of October, with some edits, and things in bold which wouldn't fit into what I originally wrote without being out of place.

I've essentially spent the past three weeks with my head in a book for one class or another.

Bought a Core Drill necklace from TTGL, a legit metal one, not the plastic one that comes with the Revoltech, and I love it. It confuses the hell out of everyone that see's it though, so far only one dude in my Japanese lit class has realized what it was, and the few people who I've told or have at least heard of it misspronounce the series name.

Currently doing well in Japanese (The original post was about the spoken midterm which I was worried about, but actually aced.), I have a 99.3% in the class right now, but I'm still worried about the final oral performance, because we have to do a bunch of shit for it, in plain and polite form.

Medieval Japanese history is fun, but the teacher's voice is too soothing, and I can't stay focused in class. I got 100% on the midterm, and on the first quiz as well (so I have 100% in the class). Second quiz is next week, and I have a term paper due in two weeks...The teacher is funny though, and is able to throw in some epic one-liners, such as "...this solves the issue of how much land to give to Myouren--None, because she's dead." If you imagine this coming from a quiet Australian man, it's hilarious.

Japanese Lit varies in what I think about it. Such a class should never be taught at 8:30AM, and it kills me trying to stay awake in that class. The most fun thing about the class are the discussion sections in which we paraphrase the crap out of the readings, putting a modern layman spin on them which you need to hear to fully understand how amusing it is. Most of the poetry stuff is annoying and boring, but the Heikei Monogatari is a good story, and I enjoy commenting on how ridiculous some parts sound. Half of it is the Taira sitting idly in their boats a few hundred yards off shore yelling at the Minamoto who are all chillin' with their horses on the beach, essentially having archery contests. The teacher took a day to wrap up the Heian period with parts of a movie, and anime about Onmyoudou that were interesting. As a result, I went and watched (and just ordered on eBay) a copy of the movie Onmyoji, which is amusing in a very goofy way. The actors who play Minamoto no Hiromasa and Abe no Semei are hilarious. Everyone should see it if they can--it's on Crunchyroll. The story of Lazy Tarou is also funny, and that's the late Kamakura/Muromachi/Ashikaga period. Midterm next Tuesday...bleh. 96.8% in the class though, with a 39/40 on the first midterm, so I'll probably be fine.

Now, on to art business! In drawing we got to use sumi brushes--a utensil I had once experimented with, and enjoy greatly. Each stroke across the page is like slashing a sword...and I found myself doodling on my scratch paper more than drawing for the actual assignment. It's so soothing and cathartic, and since I know about...I'd say 165 Kanji now, I could actually do something calligraphic with them. We just started figure drawing, and I drew from a model for the first time. Wish the model wasn't gigantic though...Plump and in spandex is a little...I though that was bad--the next day she was naked, with a roll of fat censoring her own crotch. It was like looking at Man Faye...but they were a woman. She had her legs open at one point towards a few people, and was in that pose for half an hour. Poor guys (and one cute Asian girl)...We had an old man pose nude for us next. I feel like it's a double-standard, but I enjoyed drawing him much more and actually got good practice out of it (and no, I didn't have to draw any penii).

Submitted my portfolio two weeks ago, we'll find out whether or not I got in soon enough I suppose.

Had a drawing I wanted to do, but I messed up at too many points, had no time to do it, and lost interest. At the very least though, I've started doodling in my notebook again. You'll have to settle with this one for now [link] Wouldn't it be nice if I actually drew and posted realism doodles? :DDD (His neck turns into a nose doodle :P )

Beat Oboro Muramasa even though I had it for like...two months, since I wasn't afforded enough time to actually play it.

Watching To Aru Kagaku no Railgun, will probably watch whatever the series is a branch story of eventually when I get time. I finally was able to DL the Eureka 7 movie (it's in 5 different files...) after like...5 weeks and no seeds, but I haven't gotten a chance to watch it. Decided I'll probably watch Macross Fontier eventually. Finished Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei because they finally subbed the last episode after like...three weeks. Downloading FLCL, 'cus I forgot about that series--the OST is sick; gotta love The Pillows.

Grew a beard for No-Shave November, shaved it off yesterday because we have composites (think yearbook photos) for the Fraternity tomorrow, and I didn't want to look like crap for it.

There's probably other stuff I've forgotten, but this entry is long enough already, ね? I'll write another or add to this when I have time.

I saw your post on Terytan's journal about racism, and I agree with you... some people here in Japan really do think that way, and that "It's okay, because there are only two types of people in the world; Japanese and non-Japanese." I said something to him about his obsession with panties (suuuch a good artist, I think it's a waste that he draws pedo art), and he called me a "fake Japanese" and said I was "closed-minded" and went on and on about how foreigners don't understand anything, all while calling me an idiot over and over. THAT'S closed-minded.

So I decided to check out your art, and you have some really creative art in your gallery :D Very impressed. *off to look at even more*

Ha, well, I'm glad I could be of service, and thanks--you have quite the gallery yourself! Consider yourself added to my list.
