Artist's Comments

Fullview is MANDATORY, the small version makes it impossible to see any detail. Also, sorry for the HUEG file size.

My god my god my god...so much work, so much to cover in this description...here's a place to start: This is marked critique discouraged, and damn it, I mean it. After what must've been about 30+ hours of total work and over 30 layers, I really, really don't want to hear it.

Remember those frames I had you guys vote on two weeks ago? Well, I decided to do them all! I must say, aside from a few details (toes, the bastard fingers of the feet!) the frames turned into some of the best anatomy'ed women I've ever done. I think my favorite bit of anatomy is the foot of the standing woman on the left side...Dunno why.

I decided to push the limits of everything I thought I was capable of doing, which is why this one actually has a background. Here's a list of things I did in this picture which I have never done on another occasion:
-Drawn a background in perspective
-Drawn round things in perspective.
-Shaded flat surfaces (I don't know why I can't do it. That explains all the crap textures and filters).
-Drawn buildings/architecture.
-Folds in draped fabric.
-Tried putting this many people in one picture...etc.

The perspective is flawed at certain points, and the shading isn't 100% correct. To be honest, early on there was a huge problem with the shading where I almost had the light coming from numerous directions, which I was more or less able to do a quick fix for. As you can see with the filters and patterns, I found a lot of quick fixes. >_>

I definitely pushed myself beyond what I thought I could do. I'm glad I didn't give up on this midway like I almost did.

I had actually had this sort of Greco-Roman bath idea before I posted the frames to be voted on. The entire thing was inspired by the Aphrodite of Knidos...funny, it inspires artists even today. I've definitely changed my opinion of my Art History class, that's for sure.

There's definitely a few things which aren't specifically clear about this image to the onlooker. We have the cloth they are holding. At first they seemed like togas, but that's not nearly enough fabric, so me and one of my friends have decided they were more like towels. Then there's the two girls on the left; the crouching one is a bit more childlike, but the person above her, offering her something to clothe herself with (Yay censorship :D, but I assure you, I did draw a body under it) has an unknown relationship to her. One idea was siblings, but their hair style was far too different...Then we have the main girl in the bottom middle. Why does she look away? Is she bashful? Or is she bathing with plebeians? That seems to be one thought, since she seems to have the most jewelry among them...or maybe she's concerned with the girl on the far right? Why is she looking away from everyone with a troubled expression? (Maybe it's because the only gold she has is an earing!...Y'never know >_>;) In all honesty, her expression wasn't planned..in fact, they were all originally separate images, so the relationships between them could be completely random! See what you like in it, I dislike ascribing every detail some meaning.

Other Details:
Bloom fixes everything, or at least a bunch of things; I can see why video games abuse it! Also, anyone recognize the picture on the amphora in that block? It's the "Sun Talker" image from my gallery that didn't get any love :D I felt it fit, since his clothes were the closest thing to a Greco-Roman attire. There was a strong urge to give them all crazy multi-colored hair (it would have gone well with what was originally more neon grass in the back) but I decided to try and make it an old-meets-new, and be slightly believable (if you can believe it..DATTEBAYO). The red-yellow-blue colorscheme was sort of random at first, and came about to match the floor I made...looking at the connection they have as the primary pigment colors, it's a funny coincidence isn't it? I don't even know if blue marble is real or not, but it looks cool XD That, and I was skeptic of the color I chose for the middle amphora, but after remember Marine Style vases from the Late Minoan 1b period, I'm fairly certain they had some blue painted pottery (because I didn't want any attic black or red figure paintings). Also, if you couldn't tell, the folds in the cloth were initially random to look good, but I shaded them decently enough that it almost works.

Did you actually read this far? It's over now, so link a friend or something >_>

considering the amount of personal experimentation you put into this picture, i say great try. not 100% perfect, as you noted, (and since you don't want critiques- i won't get into it), but still it speaks a lot concerning not only your present talent but future potential as well.

keep up the great work. :)

Potential's one of the few things in my favor ^^;;

Thanks for the comment.

lol. no problem. and it's good to see you're at least putting it into practice and challenging yourself to get better (unlike some others who might just content themselves with their current level and not bother to grow). art, i feel- like any other field of creativity- is all about personal integrity and how hard you try and push yourself to better your craft.

kudos for that.
